In my first middle-grade adventure story, readers are introduced to Camp Hackenspit. This idyllic summer camp, tucked away within the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico affords those campers lucky enough to visit it a wide range of adventurous opportunities, and one very mysterious secret. For those campers bright enough to solve the mystery, they are rewarded with every child’s dream; the ability to soar with the birds.
This hilarious, stimulating, and intriguing story is told by Paula to her granddaughter and begins with her journey as a twelve-year-old girl to Camp Hackenspit. She meets and is forced to tolerate the two-day car trip in the company of the most annoying boy she had ever met, 13-year-old Beanie Conway. Paula thinks he is juvenile, irresponsible, and certainly not someone that she wants to spend her summer around.
After their first night at the camp, circumstances find Paula reluctantly agreeing to partner with Beanie to investigate the cause of the mysterious incidents where the campers floated out of their bunks while sleeping. Realizing that only their two cabins experienced these incidents, they encouraged their cabin mates to keep the event secret. As their investigation unfolds, Paula begins to realize that her first impressions of Beanie Conway might have been wrong. It was true that he had a carefree, impish, and playful attitude but he also had a keen mind, a compassionate heart, and early signs of being the type of gentleman that made a girl feel special.
Through trial, error, and mutual trust, Paula and Beanie develop the confidence they need to search, experiment, and finally prove that as best friends, they could identify the source of the helium, recreate the proper environment for it to reanimate, and then train their bodies to safely and secretly share an adventurous summer soaring among the clouds.
